Chinese Medicine Acupuncture Article

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Combined with other types of TCM treatment such as herbal medicine and Chinese physical therapies - tuina, moxa, cupping therapy- acupuncture is an effective treatment for a vast array of health concerns. As an acupuncturist and TCM practitioner, I recognize your pain or illness as an imbalance in your energy system. Acupuncture regulates your body’s energy system to restore you to balance and invite self-healing.

Before determining your treatment, I must first identify the underlying TCM imbalances to ensure a successful outcome. Your symptoms are usually caused by disturbances in the Chinese organ systems – different from the Western medicine model of organs. The Chinese organ systems are energy representations of functional processes that occur within your body. For example; the Chinese Heart system is associated with circulation as well as functions such as sleep and mental faculties. Some common Heart deficiency symptoms are poor memory, difficulty falling asleep, and a pale complexion.

There are five major Chinese organ systems that are interconnected and dependent upon each other for healthy functioning. A breakdown in one system leads to decreased functioning in all the systems over time. As an acupuncturist and TCM practitioner I am trained to determine your underlying imbalances and how they are leading to your current symptoms.

In TCM, a disease or set of symptoms may have several possible causes with different organ systems contributing to the overall imbalance. Different types of underlying energy imbalances require different types of treatment. Two people with the same symptoms may receive different treatments if the underlying causes creating their symptoms are different. Someone with heart disease may have an underlying imbalance in their Chinese Liver organ system and another person’s heart disease may be due to their Chinese Kidney organ system. You can see that the root causes are different so each person would receive different acupuncture treatments.

In a disease process, there are many signs along the way that something is amiss. The trained TCM practitioner identifies the pattern that is creating the symptoms and treats both the pattern (the root) and the symptoms (the branch). Root and branch treatment ensure that your body comes to balance and stops creating illness. Rather than managing symptoms, the root of the problem is eradicated so you experience healthy functioning. TCM treatment is a way to interrupt the disease process and re-direct you to a path of healthy functioning.
