What is an Acupuncture treatment like?

First, you will be asked to complete a detailed intake form. Be prepared to list medications and dosages and be familiar with your medical history. I will examine your tongue and take the pulses of both wrists to help me determine where your imbalance lies.

Wear loose clothing that can easily expose your arms to the elbows and your legs to the knee. This allows you to remain fully clothed on the table.

I will clean your acupuncture points with alcohol and insert ultra-fine needles into the selected acupuncture points. You will lie relaxed on the table for 20-30 minutes. Your needles may be ‘twirled’ once or twice during your treatment to help move the energy. After a few moments, you may experience the sensation of distention at the insertion points. This is called ‘de qi’ or the arrival of qi – a healthy sign indicating that your qi is gathering at the needle and is ready to move through the channel.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

An acupuncture needle is 25-50 times thinner than a hypodermic needle. Each disposable needle is individually wrapped with its own guide tube designed with patient comfort in mind. Most people report feeling no sensation when the needles are inserted.

Most people feel very relaxed during their treatment and many fall asleep. “Well rested’ and ‘balanced’ are the usual words patients use to describe how they feel after acupuncture.
